Mission Statement: To transport students to and from the Sunday Biblical.lnstitute (Sunday School) and Senior Members to and
from the 11: 15 a.m. Church Service each Sunday and to manage the church's vehicular fleet, including making vehicles
available for use by other ministries, with drivers being provided by the requesting ministries
History: The
Transportation Ministry had its genesis in the mid-1950s, shortly after the church's relocation from Highland Park (current
Northwest corner of Highland Park Drive and Gondar Avenue) to its current location, 6801 Sheriff Road. Initially, the late
Deacon Dennis Colmes transported Sunday school students from and to their homes in his taxi cab at no cost to them or to the
School.
When this became too much of a challenge, the then Deacon Board Chairman Colmes went out and found a 24-passenger,
1954 Chevrolet used bus and purchased it from a local Lutheran Church. He and his wife, Deaconess Iris Colmes, paid $125 for
it with their own money. After paying its insurance for several months, they then donated the bus to the church.
Deacon Colmes was the first volunteer driver.
Others who assisted him in the early days were Deacons Enoch Smith and Harvey Broadie and Brother Marvin Elliot. (Oral history
by Deaconess Colmes.) Also, see "The Dreamer," an autobiography of our Pastor Emeritus, the late Rev. Dr. James
C. Wyatt, Sr., page 59.)
From this humble beginning, God has blessed this ministry to grow to a current fleet
of one 40-passenger bus, seven 14-passenger vans, one of which is equipped with wheel-chair-lift capability, and two trucks.
In support of the Sunday Biblical Institute and the transport of Senior. Members to the 11:15 a.m. Church Service, we have
a staff of 12 volunteer drivers, of which, five are deployed each Sunday. An additional 110 drivers also have volunteered
to drive in support of their ministries' transportation requirements.
Policies and Procedures: Sunday Biblical Institute and 11: 15 a. m. Church Service - Policy - Every effort is made to transport to the Institute and the 11: 15
a.m. Church Service any passenger who requests transportation and lives within 12 miles of the church.
- Procedures - Sunday Biblical Institute and 11:
15 a.m. Church Service - Any person desiring transportation from home to the Institute or 11: 15 a.m. service, each Sunday
must call the Transportation Dispatcher, (301) 773-6655, extension 5, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., requesting
transportation. The dispatcher will request the caller's name, pick-up address, telephone number and number of passengers
to be transported. The dispatcher will inform the caller as to the approximate time that the van will arrive. Passengers must
be prepared to board the van immediately upon its arrival. (Due to time constrains and the scheduled pick-up of other passengers,
drivers are instructed to not stand and wait for passengers.)
For return trips home, vans are boarded at the same
location from which passengers were discharged. The departure time shall be not later than 15 minutes after the close of the
Biblical Institute and 15 minutes after the close of the 11:15 a.m. Church Service.
