Discipleship Ministry

Introduction of Ministry:
The Navigators 2:7 Training Series is designed for small group intensive Bible study for both men and women, facilitated by two leaders. The Series consists of six 11-week courses-Courses 1, 2, and 3 (The 2:7 In God's Family Series, and Classic Courses 3, 4 and 5 (The 2:7 Ministering Disciple Series)

Courses 1-3 focus on The Growing Disciple, and the look is more "inward" where students are focused on their own spiritual growth and development. Classic Courses 3-5 focus on The Ministering Disciple and the emphasis is more "outward" where students are focused on ministering to others.

Each course in The 2:7 Series builds on the previous course. The prerequisite for Classic Courses 3-5 is the successful completion of the three courses in The 2:7 In God's Family Series-Growing Strong In God's Family, Deepening Your Roots In God's Family, and Bearing Fruit In God's Family.

Mission Statement:

In continuing the fulfillment of First Baptist Church of Highland Park’s commitment to Our Lord’s Great Commission (Matthew 28: 18-21), the Colossians 2:7 Discipleship Series was established with three purposes:

  1. To raise up faithful men and women who will be able to teach others. - 2 Timothy 2:2
  2. To present every believer perfect in Christ. - Colossians 1:28-29
  3. To prepare each believer for his personal Mission Field. - Acts 1:8

History:
Pastor James J. McCord implemented a discipleship training institute at First Baptist Church of Highland Park based on information Eric Redmond brought back from a conference at The Washington Bible College. Rev. Ronald E. Crawford, then Dean of Christian Education and three other men were the first participants from First Baptist to attend the Navigators Leadership Training Conference which took place in 1991 in Fredericksburg, Va.

They were also the facilitators of the first men's discipleship classes. The first graduation class of eight men who completed the first three courses of The 2:7 In God's Family Series was held in March, 1993. As a result of the success of the first group of men, the discipleship ministry was opened to both men and women.

The women's discipleship group was the outgrowth of a second leadership training session, which was held at First Baptist in the fall of 1992. From among the group of trainees, Deaconess Yvonne Felton was appointed as the Coordinator of Women's Discipleship classes.

Scripture Reference:
Colossians 2:7
Rooted and built up in Him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
